Having co-founded Arielle Executive, a top-tier personal branding company that helps executives land their dream roles, I realised that there’s a growing need for a premium resume writing service that does the same for non-executive professionals. The idea for Exceptional Resume Writers was born. But I was only going to build this business if I could do it well.
THE EXCEPTIONAL STORY.
FIRST, I NEEDED TO ASSEMBLE A CRACK TEAM.
Every resume writer claims to be the best. But how do they back it up? Well, I can’t speak for others, but I can tell you how I went about ensuring that my team of resume writers could live up to the standard that I required.
MY QUEST TO FIND TOP TALENT.
I started by scouring LinkedIn for Australian and NZ resume writers, career coaches and transition specialists. I reviewed approximately 200 profiles and their associated websites. Of those, I contacted about 40 candidates who I thought had potential.
LET THE TESTS BEGIN.
I spoke to them about the opportunity and the rigorous 4-stage selection process they’d need to overcome. They’d need to submit samples of their existing work, then participate in a phone interview. Next, they’d face two elimination rounds which consisted of written tests designed to expose their weaknesses and highlight their strengths. (My first job was in the Army, so I know a thing or two about building rigorous tests). Thirty-three candidates said, “yes, I’m interested”.
ONLY NINE CANDIDATES MADE IT THROUGH ALL FOUR STAGES.
Interest is not proof of commitment. And commitment is not proof of excellence. Some writers had great skills, but poor attitude – and vice versa. Keeping track of all communication and results proved to be difficult, so I built a dedicated Trello board to make sure that nothing – and no-one – got lost. As test results began to roll in, it became clear that three candidates were in a lead pack of their own. They became my final three picks.

Next, I raised the bar once again by putting the successful candidates through a rigorous internal system of training, reviews and feedback. When the time is right, I’ll expand the team to 5, but for me, this journey is not about sheer growth. When I start a business, I set out to create art. I aim to ensure that every customer, product, team member, system, process and message exist in a perfectly symbiotic relationship with one another. Of course, pure perfection is unattainable, but the relentless pursuit of it is what keeps me interested and engaged. Obsessed, even. Now, drum roll, please.
